Dictionary of Australasian signs by the Victorian college of the deaf

this publication resulted from national consultation with both the deaf community and their hearing teachers; resulting in an additional 560 signs.

At the time it was thought that adding ‘Signed English’ signs to assist English literacy was advantageous and desirable. Many of these signs have since been adopted by the deaf community and others have disappeared from use.

Children's Unspoken Language

Gwyneth Doherty-Sneddon, a developmental psychologist and the mother of two young children, demonstrates the way in which a young child's developing personality and intelligence is revealed through non-verbal communication. She shows how parents and other adults have the potential to facilitate a child's social and intellectual growth through acknowledging and responding to this unspoken language.

Taking an in-depth look at four of the channels of non-verbal communication - hand gesture, facial expression, eye gaze and touch - this accessible text follows the development of young children from birth to late primary school age. Using jargon-free language Children's Unspoken Language is invaluable reading for parents and professionals alike.

Listening with your eyes; kids who are Deaf and hard of hearing

Kids who are deaf or hard of hearing might not be able hear what's going on around them, but their eyes give them a lot of information about the world. Some people who are deaf or hard of hearing might wear hearing aids or have surgery to help their ears hear better, while others rely even more on their eyes for help. People who can't hear can understand a lot by watching people's actions and looking at the expressions on their faces. They might also be able to lip-read or they might use sign language to communicate. Being deaf or hard of hearing doesn't mean life is any less exciting and interesting!

Forbidden Signs

by Douglas Baynton

Forbidden Signs explores American culture from the mid-nineteenth century to 1920 through the lens of one striking episode: the campaign led by Alexander Graham Bell and other prominent Americans to suppress the use of sign language among deaf people.

The ensuing debate over sign language invoked such fundamental questions as what distinguished Americans from non-Americans, civilized people from "savages," humans from animals, men from women, the natural from the unnatural, and the normal from the abnormal. An advocate of the return to sign language, Baynton found that although the grounds of the debate have shifted, educators still base decisions on many of the same metaphors and images that led to the misguided efforts to eradicate sign language.

Sounds from Silence: Graeme Clark and the Bionic Ear Story

by Professor Graeme Clarke

In those early weeks post op, he had been aware of sound but not of speech. We were sitting in the sofa having a lesson, practising a'''' when suddenly it came out loud and clear. Then, hardly daring, I said ''''i''''. He followed very softly. I went on: ''''e'''', ''''o'''', u'''', and each time Teddy followed. I felt awed, so filled with emotion I couldn't speak. Teddy was shining, as if a light had been switched on. Then, very slowly, he leaned over and kissed me very gently on the mouth. That kiss belongs to you.' A letter from a grateful grandmother after Graeme Clark restored her grandson's hearing. Sounds From Silence is the very personal story of how Professor Graeme Clark developed the Bionic Ear, how he conceived and directed research and how Cochlear took it up to give so many people, both young and old, the chance to hear. It movingly tells of how the profoundly deaf and their families cope with the silence of deafness, and of their joy in being given the gift of hearing. However, Graeme Clark also reveals the often seemingly insurmountable barriers put in his way: the mistrust of sections of the deaf community, the scepticism of many of his professional colleagues and the constant frustration in trying to find funding for his research. This is a powerful and moving story of one man's professional and personal journey to give sounds from silence.
